At one point, you even overhear a couple arguing inside an apartment building and in addition to containing some spectacularly foul language, the exchange brims with tension and anger, again setting the mood perfectly. The haggard and frightening figures you pass as you stroll through the cobblestone streetsmerchants, policemen, prostitutes, etc.reflect the depression and squalor in which they live. The color pallet for the orphanage and the grimy London slum that youre able to explore would be ∽ickensian Gloom if it was a Crayola crayon color. Exploring the orphanage perfectly establishes the dreary, bleak, and foul tone that defines Alices sad and tortured existence (no wonder shes so keen to leave the real-world behind in favor of Wonderful, in spite of that baffling place's oddities and peculiarities). Alice has since left the Rutledge Asylum and been taken in at the Houndsditch Home orphanage, which is where the game opens. Madness Returns picks up 10 years after the events of the previous game.
